1st edition. Period boards, 40 (large magazine size), 1054 pages. In Russian with very occasional Hebrew. Title translates as, "The Future: Independent Organ of the Russian Jews." This Russian-Jewish weekly ran from 1899-1904. The editor, Semen O. Gruzenberg, was the brother of Oskar Osipovich Gruzenberg (1866–1940) a communal advocate and chief counsel of Mendel Beilis and who “regularly called for equal rights and integration of the Jews into Russian society in such publications as Budushchnost’” (ChaeRan Freeze in YIVO encyclopedia). The scholar Samuel Kassow described Budushchnost’ as one of the “important historical journals and periodicals that appeared in tsarist Russia” (YIVO encyclopedia).
